Transnational Forms of Right-Wing Extremism Using the Example of the \u00dclk\u00fcc\u00fc Movement<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The sub-project \u201cReTra\u201d aims to gain deeper insights into the ideology, structure, and activities of the so-called Gray Wolves in Bavaria, as well as their connections to Turkey. In addition to analyzing the constellation of actors, we examine local contexts. What conditions contribute to the normalization of right-wing extremism with ties to Turkey? What role do various state actors play? What counterstrategies exist?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Apart from the so-called “wolf salute,” little is known about the Gray Wolves. They exploit this lack of awareness to present themselves as democratic migrant organizations. Otherwise, they remain inconspicuous in daily life, despite the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution estimating over 1,150 active members in Bavaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using systematic discourse and content analysis, along with other methodological approaches, we investigate the narratives and structures of the so-called Gray Wolves in Bavaria. This allows us to assess their potential threat and develop measures to restrict their scope of action.

This research contributes to the study of transnational forms of right-wing extremism. We know that far-right groups network across national borders in terms of personnel, finances, and ideology. While the concept of nation-states as closed entities is central to right-wing extremist ideology, it does not necessarily apply to their strategies and operational logic. The \u00dclk\u00fcc\u00fc movement serves as a case study to examine these transnational phenomena, which in turn enhances the broader analysis of right-wing extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research is supported by an advisory group consisting of civil society actors engaged with the \u00dclk\u00fcc\u00fc movement. Additionally, the sub-project has established a network of researchers to facilitate discussions on ongoing developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
